{"id":482,"date":"2023-10-24T15:21:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T06:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/environ.kit.ac.jp\/en\/?page_id=482"},"modified":"2025-08-08T11:03:26","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T02:03:26","slug":"inorganic-liquid-waste-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/environ.kit.ac.jp\/en\/inorganic-liquid-waste-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Inorganic Liquid Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Inorganic liquid waste treatment at Center for Environmental Science<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Our college began on-campus disposal of inorganic liquid waste in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002, the treatment facility was upgraded and the treatment method was changed from the neutralizing coagulation method to <strong>the iron powder method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This facility has treated more than 20,000 liters of flue gas flushing wastewater from organic liquid waste treatment facility on campus, in addition to inorganic liquid waste discharged from laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>The iron powder method <\/strong>is a method for recovering heavy metals from liquid waste by precipitating heavy metals with iron powder having reducing ability and coagulating them with dissolved iron ions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/environ.kit.ac.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/inorganic-treatment-plant.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/environ.kit.ac.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/inorganic-treatment-plant.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/environ.kit.ac.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/inorganic-treatment-plant-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/environ.kit.ac.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/inorganic-treatment-plant-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Inorganic liquid waste treatment facility on campus <br>2002-2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After more than 40 years of on-campus treatment of inorganic liquid waste, in 2017 we shut down organic liquid waste treatment facility and began outsourcing disposal of organic liquid waste, resulting in a significant decrease in the amount of inorganic liquid waste treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, due to the aging of the inorganic liquid waste treatment facility, in 2022 we terminated our on-campus inorganic liquid waste treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2023, the collection, transportation, and disposal of inorganic liquid waste will be outsourced to licensed contractors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Flow of inorganic liquid waste treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size has-very-light-gray-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color\"><strong>Separation and storage of inorganic liquid waste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><span style=\"color:#0693e3\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u25bc<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>In each laboratory, inorganic liquid waste should be stored in following six categories according to the substances it contains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-17\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-17\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><\/td><th class=\"column-2\">containing substances<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">I. <\/td><td class=\"column-2\">hazardous heavy metal compounds; Inorganic acids<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc.<\/td><td rowspan=\"2\" class=\"column-3\">Liquid waste containing light metals should be classified as III or IV depending on its pH.<br \/>\nNeutral (pH=7) liquid wastes containing inorganic salts should be classified as Category III.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">IV. Inorganic alkalis<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-6\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">V. Those who require inorganic liquid waste treatment are encouraged to apply through the Waste Liquid Application System; <a href=\"https:\/\/kit-wlas.net\/app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/kit-wlas.net\/app\/<\/a>, within the application period.<\/li><li>Log in to the system with your lab account. style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Containers of liquid waste to be disposed of should be brought to the liquid waste treatment site on the designated date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" id=\"carrying\">Procedures for carrying in<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Those who have applied for inorganic liquid waste treatment are required to bring the containers of liquid waste to the liquid waste treatment site on the designated date notified by e-mail.<\/li><li>Affix three labels to each container: 1) a label printed with the reference number, laboratory name and contents, 2) a label indicating the category of the liquid waste, and 3) a label indicating the pH level.<\/li><li>In addition, the labels must be affixed with the name of the cyanide compound if it contains cyanide, or the name of the hazardous metal if it contains a hazardous heavy metal.<\/li><li>After labeling, put the containers in place.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size has-very-light-gray-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color\"><strong>Treatment of inorganic liquid waste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-center has-large-font-size has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">\u25bc<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Inorganic liquid waste collected by licensed contractors is transported to a treatment plant for disposal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" id=\"treatment\">Treatment of inorganic liquid waste<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Inorganic liquid waste, excluding mercury-containing liquid waste, is transported and disposed of by Japan Waste Corporation. <br>Most of the liquid waste goes through intermediate processes of coagulation sedimentation, cyanide decomposition, and neutralization at the Kobe Plant before being transported to a final disposal site for incineration.<br>A part of the residue after incineration is recycled as cement material, etc., while the rest is landfilled at a controlled final disposal site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liquid waste containing mercury compounds is transported by Kyokko-Sangyo Co., Ltd. to Itomuka Plant of Nomura Kohsan Co., Ltd. together with solid waste containing\/contaminated with mercury.<br>Mercury vaporized by the calcinating furnace is recovered and used as a reagent or reused in fluorescent lamps and special measuring instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img
